2026 the year of the magician

Hello my friends, welcome to 2026! This month, along with the regularly scheduled collective tarot reading for January, I wanted to acknowledge the new calendar year and share some insight on themes we may move through as a collective over the next 12 month cycle. You can find the January Collective Tarot Reading here!

In numerology 2026 is a 1 year, we get to this number by adding the numbers of the year together and consolidating them down to a single digit (2+0+2+6=10, which consolidates to 1+0=1). If you’re curious to know your personal number for the year to discover themes for you as an individual, you can use the same steps to find it, just add your birth month + birth day + current calendar year and consolidate (for example, my birthday is June 15th, so I’d do 0+6+1+5+2+0+2+6=22, 2+2=4, so this is a 4 year for me personally).

The 1 card in the tarot is the Magician, so as a universal collective this year holds themes of using the tools, lessons, and techniques we’ve acquired over time to create what it is we truly want to see for ourselves and for the world. As individuals we are asked to not just act on a single plane, but to recognize ourselves as intermediaries between the earth and sky, we are meant to gather resources and information from above (which can be a symbol for the spiritual and the etherial vastness of the cosmos) as well as from below (which can be a symbol for more tangible resources and the material) and then utilize them responsibly and creatively to make “magic” or to make what seems impossible possible.

I love themes of the Magician and making the impossible possible because it blends together two topics that are close to me on a personal level, first, the power of the subconscious mind and second, circus, both of which speak the most empowering and hopeful language of all… IMAGINATION. (Yep, the word ‘imagination’ contains the world ‘magi’ in it, plural of magus, which is another word for magician or sorcerer or wisdom keeper… pretty cool, huh)?!

Imagination challenges the mind to stretch and play in order to expand what the critical mind believes to be possible. What could it mean for us all to become students of imagination, to become fluent in the art of magic?

Imagination makes the impossible possible, not by sleight of hand or trickery, but through vision, creative exploration, and dedicated action (and yes a little bit of magic sparkle dust from the Universe, if you ask me)!

Pablo Picasso wrote, “Everything you can imagine is real”. What we can imagine becomes reality, first we envision and dream it in our minds, next we draw it towards us through aligned actions, then there’s a phase of synchronicities and previously unseen opportunities that appear (we must be present enough to notice/meet/claim them), and then what we imagined eventually, over time, manifests into a tangible lived experience that we previously may have deemed impossible. This is powerful alchemy, the work of the Magician, it requires perserverence, trust, action, and responsibility.

Will we heed the call? As we begin this year and move into this energy, it’s potent to take time and consider what vision you’d like to hold for yourself and for the collective, and then identify some small action steps you can take to move towards it. It would be a great practice to check in with yourself each month to see how the action steps may have opened up new pathways or options or led you to identify subsequent action steps to keep the energy flowing towards the goal.

As we consider the more shadowy aspects of the Magician, this year it is particularly important to stay aware of thoughts and imaginings and where we are focusing our attention, because imaginings rooted in fear have the potential become reality as well.

We must be intentional. We must stay connected to our hearts and our inner knowing. We must not let fear infuse our sacred imaginings. We must stay focused.

With a sparkling clear vision, focused action, and a little bit of magic, our imaginings have a real opening to create the beautiful sustainable future we wish to be a part of in 2026.
